Markel

James L. "Nupe" Markel, 88, of Seybertown, Pa., died Friday at his home.

He was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Seybertown to William E. and Nora B. (Simpson) Markel.

Nupe was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He spent his years woodworking, fishing, watching his grandchildren grow and watching the Allegheny River from his front window.

He was employed by the former Rex-Hide in East Brady for many years until its closing and was a self-employed carpenter.

He served as a private first class with Anti-Tank Company, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Division, 5th Army, during World War II, serving in Rome-Arno, the Northern Apennines and Po Palley. He was a recipient of the EAME Theater Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct Medal and an American Theater Service Medal.

He was a member of the former Christian Missionary and Alliance Church in East Brady for many years. In recent years, he attended the East Brady United Methodist Church as his health permitted.

He was a member of American Legion Post 488 in Bradys Bend, the Disabled American Vets and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7131 in Rimersburg.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Crawford) Markel of Seybertown, who he married Feb. 22, 1957; three sons, James Markel and his wife, Debbie, of Millville, N.J., Robert Markel and Amy Smith of Bradys Bend, and William Markel and wife, Sheila, of Seybertown; a daughter, MaryAnn McGuire and her husband, Robert, of Butler; five grandchildren, Ryan Markel of New Jersey, Marc Spangler of Butler, Drew Spangler of Butler, David Markel of Seybertown and Daniel Markel of Seybertown. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was Preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Roberta "Burd" Hiles, Leona Crissman and Bessie McElroy; and two brothers, Robert and Curt Markel.

<B>MARKEL</B> — Friends of James Markel, who died Friday, April 23, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the <B>Charles B. Buechele Funeral Home,</B> 105 4th St., East Brady. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Edwin Dixon, retired CMA Pastor, officiating.Internment will follow at Rimersburg Cemetery, Rimersburg.American Legion Post 488 will conduct Memorial Services at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.Contributions can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 20421 Route 19, Cranberry, PA 16006, in Honor of his grandson, Danny Markel.
