Rock win streak snapped at 18
SLIPPERY ROCK — The streak didn't die easily, but die it did.
Senior forward Daziah Miller sank both ends of a one-and-one with 10 seconds remaining Sunday, enabling Shippensburg to hold off Slippery Rock by a 77-74 count in men's college basketball action at Morrow Field House.
The loss was The Rock's first of the season and snapped an 18-game regular season winning streak dating back to Jan. 31 of last year.
"We're disappointed with the way we lost," SRU coach Kevin Reynolds said. "We missed way too many layups in this gameand we didn't get to the foul line enough.
"We only sank three of eight free throws in the second half. That really hurt us."
Shippensburg (7-4) took the lead for good on a pair of Brian Oleksiak free throws with 28 seconds left in the first half. The Red Raiders led by as many as 12 (57-45) with 12:22 to play.
The visitors had a 75-68 lead with less than a minute remaining, but missed the front end of consecutive one-and-ones in the final seconds as SRU (10-1) stormed back.
Maron Brown stuck back an offensive rebound with 31 seconds left, then sank a layup with 17.9 ticks on the clock. A backcourt steal resulted in a Maurice Douglas layup in transition.
With 12.2 seconds left, The Rock suddenly trailed 75-74.
"That's a great basketball team and they keep on coming," Shippensburg coach Dave Springer said. "But Daziah Miller is our best foul shooter and I was fully confident he'd make both of those shots."
Miller's free throws enabled the Red Raiders to defend the 3-point shot on SRU's final possession. A desperation attempt didn't come close as The Rock went down to defeat.
"They were more ready to play today than we were and that's on me," Reynolds said. "We scored 36 points on 33 3-point shots and that's solid production.
"But we were only 16 of 38 on 2-point shots. You can't win many games doing that."
Maurice Douglas sank five treys and led The Rock with 20 points. Jabril Bailey added 15 points and 13 rebounds. SRU was held to its lowest point total since a 69-64 win over Bloomsburg on Nov. 21.
"You have to cut off their transition game because they're so quick and you have to come way out to guard the three, because they'll sink 'em from well beyond the arc," Springer said.
Miller led all scorers for Shippensburg with 23 points.
SRU's regular season win streak reached 18 with a 96-86 triumph over Cheyney on Saturday at Morrow Field House. Brown had 21 points and 11 rebounds in that contest while Bailey had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Shippensburg 69, SRU (women) 66 — The lead changed hands 28 times with neither team ever leading by more than seven points as the Red Raiders (6-8) played without injured starting point guard Morgan Taylor. The final lead change occurred when Lauren Beckley sank a 3-pointer with 4:10 remaining, giving the visitors a 60-58 edge. Kerry Conroy nailed a 3-pointer on the Red Raiders' next possession and The Rock never got closer than three the rest of the way."We had to foul on purpose late ... Another five minutes and we probably wind up on top in this game," SRU Coach Laurel Heilman said. "It was back and forth constantly."Beckley, a senior forward, scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half and tied Shippensburg's career scoring record of 2,057 points."Lauren's playing with a bad back and was struggling to get in position for her shots in the first half," Shippensburg coach Kristy Trn said. "She spotted up much better and seemed more comfortable in the second half."Heilman said her strategy against Beckley was "to not let her get the ball.""She's not an All-American for nothing," SRU's coach said. "We did a great job suffocating her early, but a player like that is going to get hers."Kasey Gardner added 18 points and 15 rebounds for Shippensburg, which had a 40-24 rebounding edge on The Rock. The visitors scored 15 second-chance points to SRU's two."When you lose by three points, it's the little things ... A loose ball here or there, not getting to the line or boxing out," Heilman said.SRU (3-8) sank all eight of its free throws. Shippensburg hit 17 of 20.The loss spoiled a career-high 24-point effort from Rock senior guard Nikki Presto, who added six assists. Grove City high graduate Julie Molloy added 16 points."Their guards are so quick," Trn said of The Rock. "Nikki is dangerous in penetration toward the hoop and when she's hitting from outside, she's virtually unstoppable. I knew this was gonna be a scrap."Presto sank her first nine shots from the floor and hit all three of her free throws."She's been our most comsistent player so far," Heilman said. "She's great in the open court."SRU snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 68-64 win over Cheyney. Molloy had 17 points and five rebounds with Grace Palucis contributing 16 points, including four treys.
