SRU depth keys 47-6 win at Lock Haven
LOCK HAVEN — Opportunity presented, opportunity used.
Ryan O'Rourke and Akeem Satterfield saw regular playing time for the first time this season Saturday and were key contributors to Slippery Rock University's 47-6 football victory at Lock Haven.
O'Rourke, a freshman, completed nine of 15 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in the first half as The Rock (6-4, 3-4) built a 38-0 lead by halftime at Hubert Jack Stadium.
O'Rourke got his first collegiate start because Rocco Colavecchia had the flu and missed practice all week.
"Rocco never had a chance to work with our game-plan in practice. He understood why we went with Ryan," SRU coach George Mihalik said. "Ryan's play was very positive today.
"He read the coverages and defensive formations extremely well. That's something I didn't expect. It was a nice surprise."
O'Rourke connected with Devin Goda for a 34-yard touchdown pass for the final score of the first half.
Satterfield, a red-shirt freshman running back, did not start the game. SayQuan scott-Mitchell scored The Rock's first touchdown on a 44-yard run 22 seconds into the game. He injured his ankle on the next offensive series, however, and left the contest.
Satterfield replaced him and wound up with 19 carries for 107 yards and touchdown runs of 10 and 45 yards.
"Akeem took advantage of his opportunity," Mihalik said.
The victory secured a winning season for SRU, the 17th in Mihalik's 22 years at the helm, while Lock Haven (0-9, 0-7) increased its school-record losing streak to 20.
The Bald Eagles have not scored a point in the first half all season. Lock Haven fumbled the all 11 times Saturday, losing four of them. Linebacker Pat Marsilio had two of The Rock's six quarterback sacks.
"It was rainy and a slippery ball caused some of those fumbles," Mihalik allowed. "We fumbled four times ourselves, but I'd say seven of theirs were caused by good hits by our defense."
SRU also blocked three punts on the day — two by Andre Freeman — with Kyle Smedi returning one six yards for a touchdown.
"We didn't allow them to get off two other punts," Mihalik said. "Rob Keys, our special teams coach, deserves a lot of credit there. He saw something on the films and felt our pressure could get there."
Lock Haven had minus 4 yards in total offense — including minus 65 rushing.
SRU closes the season this Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff at East Stroudsburg.
