Joseph L. 'Joe' McEvoy

Joseph L. "Joe" McEvoy of Lumar Village, formerly of Nulph Lane in Butler, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Herman on Sept. 6, 1931, he was the son of the late Joseph S. and Mildred Denny McEvoy.

Joe was Roman Catholic. He served in the Air Force as a heavy equipment operator in Korea during the Korean War.

Joe started his working career as a tool dresser on a gas well in Renovo, then worked as a truck driver, owning his own trucks hauling cars, coal and steel for companies. He also owned a mobile home toter, shanty shaker, and moved mobile homes.

He then went to Groton, Conn., to work on atomic submarines at Electric Boat as a painter, cleaner and on the nuclear decontamination crew. Joe then worked for Linde Aire, a division of Union Carbide. He delivered oxygen and nitrogen and retired from this company while working in Hatfield.

Joe was a member of the VFW Post 249 in Butler, the American Legion Post 778 and the Slovak Club in Lyndora. He enjoyed traveling, camping and visiting with family and friends. He always kept busy fixing things around his home or creating something out of odds and ends.

He loved going to Florida for the winter where he could ride his bicycle. Joe was also known for his unique sense of humor.

Joe is survived by his wife, Carol Nulph McEvoy, who he married on Dec. 3, 1976; four daughters, Dr. Patti Jamil, and her husband, Mohammed, of Houston, Anita Suiter and her husband, Dick, of Panama City, Fla., Joy Powers of Leakey, Texas, and Jean Mountz and her husband, Leon, of Gastonia, N.C.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Joe also is survived by three stepchildren, Richard Humphreys of Tulsa, Okla., Karen Monday and her husband, Michael, of Butler and Edward Humphreys of Seattle, five stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He also is survived by three sisters, Rita Allan of Oakmont, Mary Lorene "Renie" Green and her husband, Robert, of Butler, and Regina "Jean" Baker and her husband, John, of Buffalo, N.Y., and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Hesky, and a brother, James McEvoy.

<B>MCEVOY </B>— A memorial service for Joseph L. "Joe" McEvoy, who died Thursday, July 2, 2009, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the <B>THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME,</B> 124 E. North St. The Rev. Steven Neff of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church will officiate.
