Butler Twp. captures Colt region tournament
STRUTHERS, Ohio — Butler Township won the Colt Western Regional Tournament for 15 year olds last weekend and is moving on to zone play.
The 12-member team is primarily comprised of the players who won the state championship and reached the Little League World Series regional in Bristol, Conn., as 12-year-olds in 2006.
At this year's Colt Western Regional, Butler Township outscored the opposition 36-14 in four games.
Mickey Fennell pitched a complete game and struck out seven in a 12-2 victory over Tri-T of Ohio. Matthew Baranchak struck out five in defeating the Cranberry Raiders 4-2. Alex Ziegler got the save in that contest, striking out three.
Butler Township defeated Youngstown (Ohio) Babe Ruth 12-6 and 8-4 to claim the championship. Cody West was the winner in the first matchup and Fennell won the title game.
Center fielder Ziegler had seven hits in 15 at-bats in the tournament, while Fennell was 6-for-12 and third baseman Dalton Koebler was 6-for-17.
Catcher Thomas Bruce had five hits in eight at-bats. First baseman Chris Cotton and right fielder David Tompkins contributed four hits each.
Other players on the team include shortstop Colin Williamson, left fielder Dante Dorcy and backup infielders Spencer Murray and Anthony Graziani.
Coaches of the team, 27-5 so far this season, are Bruce Ziegler, Chris Cotton and Jay Fennell.
Butler Township will compete in the Colt Eastern Zone Tournament, featuring of four regional champions, this weekend in Trenton, N.J.
