PITTSBURGH — A former Pittsburgh police chaplain will stand trial on charges he kept money he collected for the family of a 12-year-old girl killed in a shooting.
Keith Smith, 61, of Crafton, is charged with keeping $332 in church donations he collected for the family of Jolesa Barber. Barber was killed Jan. 28 when two gunmen fired more than 40 shots into her sister's home. Police said Barber was an innocent bystander in a gang-related dispute.
Smith was removed from the volunteer chaplain's post in August after police couldn't confirm he was ordained.
Smith's attorney said he had the money but just hadn't spent it on the family by the time police accused him of taking it in October.
