PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Museum of Art presents an exhibition of abstract art that highlights big names and never-before exhibited works."Abstract Art before 1950: Watercolors, Drawings, Prints, and Photographs" will be on view in the Scaife Works on Paper gallery from June 13 to Oct. 18.Viewers to the exhibition will encounter many of the avant-garde movements in which American, European, and Japanese abstract artists participated: cubism, futurism, dada, Russian suprematism, constructivism and early abstract expressionism.Continuing is "Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International," through Jan. 11.Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays; closed Mondays and major holidays. PITTSBURGH — The 49th annual Three Rivers Arts Fest, with 300 artists, more than 50 live music performances, 15 visual arts installations and four original dance and theater productions, will enliven downtown Pittsburgh's historic plazas, city streets and open spaces from June 6 to 22. Point Park is still closed for renovations.Highlights include:• "Contained," a new exhibition that engaged 10 artists and artist teams to transform used shipping containers into immersive art experiences.• "Take Me Out," Tony Award-winning play.• "Dream Machine," an interactive sculpture by Schenley High School graduate Nathan Green, inviting interaction with whimsical playground equipment in Market Square.• The annual Duquesne Light Artists Market, featuring 300 artists and crafters.• The UPMC Health Plan Family Festival, featuring hands-on art experiences and the new Community Stage, where children from around the region will perform dance, music and theater.• 17 nights of performances on the Festival Main Stage, located at the Stanwix Triangle.Hours for the Duquesne Light Artists Market and indoor exhibits are noon to 8 p.m. daily. NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Playhouse will present "Echoes of the War," two short plays by J.M. Barrie, best known for his famous play "Peter Pan," from June 6 to 22 at the annex theater, 212 E. PITTSBURGH — Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society will celebrate Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary with Rootz: The Green City Music Festival on July 12 in Mellon Park. Admission is free.The festival will begin at 11:45 a.m. and run until 10 p.m. with a full day of concerts and children's activities.Six-time Grammy Award nominee Mike Seeger will kick off the festival with a concert at 7:30 p.m. July 9 under the tent at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 6300 Fifth Ave. in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh.
