Domenic R. "Dom" Canterna, 90, formerly of Freeport, passed away at 1:14 a.m. Thursday in the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia, Jefferson Twp.

He was born on Sept. 16, 1917, in Freeport to the late Domenic and Isabelle (Demme) Canterna, and lived in the borough the majority of his life.

Mr. Canterna graduated from Freeport High School in 1935. He then attended and graduated from Salem College of Salem, W.Va., with a bachelor's of arts degree in physical education, social studies and commerce in 1941.

Dom was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. During his tenure with the Army, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.

Mr. Canterna held various positions with several veterans administration hospitals, including Butler, Aspinwall-Oakland, and Baltimore, Md. He retired in 1980 from his position as director of volunteer services from the Leech Farm Veterans administration hospital on University Drive, Pittsburgh.

He was a member of the St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Freeport, where he was an usher for years and was a former member of the Church Council. Additionally, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Natrona Council 2602, B.P.O.E. 203, Kittanning. He served as vice president of the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame and was active and well known for refereeing football, basketball, and baseball for over 45 years, all throughout Western Pennsylvania.

Dom is survived by his wife of 62 years, whom he married on Feb. 24, 1945: Freda L. (Tucker) Canterna, his son, Richard C. (Linda) Canterna of Akron, Ohio, his daughter, Sandra A. Canterna of Freeport, two grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Canterna; two brothers, William Canterna of Irwin and Oland "Dodo" Canterna of Latrobe; and his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Canterna of Freeport.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Nick S. Canterna, Charles "Chuck" Canterna, and Albert Canterna.

CANTERNA — Family and friends may call from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth St., Freeport, where parting prayers of transfer will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Christian Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Freeport, with his pastor, Rev. John T. Euker as celebrant.
