The Rev. Thomas Duane "T.D." Stewart, 91, of New Castle Road, Worth Township, died at 3:20 p.m. Thursday at the Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, after a nine-month illness.

Born in Homestead, Allegheny County, Jan. 29, 1916, he was the son of Ralph Osborne Stewart and Etta Mae Luppold Stewart.

After attending Homestead High School, he attended the Pittsburgh Aeronautic Institute and graduated from Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. He then graduated from and received his master of divinity degree from Pittsburgh Xenia Seminary, now the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

He was ordained in the Methodist church in 1945 and served a number of Methodist churches in the Western Pennsylvania Conference and worked for the Salvation Army in Pittsburgh. He also served a number of Presbyterian churches, including Friendship Parish, which includes the Bethel, Wolf Creek and West Liberty Presbyterian churches, in the Slippery Rock area. He remained active in the ministry until his illness nine months ago.

Rev. Stewart enjoyed working in his wood shop, reading, being outdoors and his model trains.

He had a pastoral affiliation with Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Charlene "Cheri" Davison of Economy; two sons, Edward Duane Stewart and his wife, Lynn, of Valencia and Dr. Thomas Dean Stewart and his wife, Victoria, of Grove City; seven grandchildren, Jodi Kostek and her husband, Mark, and Julie Chwalik and her husband, William, Richard, Timothy and his wife, Lynda, Mark and his wife, Heather, and Tristan, and Triona Stewart; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He married Dorothy Marie Beal Stewart on June 19, 1941. She died Jan. 21, 1988. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Ralph, and Donald; and two sisters: Alice Arbuckle and Lois Cannon.

Stewart, who died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Visitation also will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, Franklin Street, Slippery Rock, where services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Pamela Gardner, church pastor and the Rev. Harold Greenway, a retired Methodist minister from Grove City, officiating. Burial will be at the Butler County Memorial Cemetery, Butler Township.Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
