YOUTH SOCCER
The Northern Steel Select Soccer Club won a pair of championships at the Dulles Youth Soccer Tournament in Herndon, Va., last weekend.
The under-12 girls defeated the North Carolina Heat, 2-0, in the title game as Allyson Kendall and Kyler Lum scored goals. In other games, they defeated CYAof Virginia 11-0, the Raleigh (N.C.)Heat 3-0 and SYCof Virginia 6-0.
Throughout the tournament, stellar defense was provided by goalie Charlene Doerr of Portersville and defenders Kendall, Kalie Davis, Brook Dicks, Marissa DiCola and Abbey Gore.
The under-13 girls also won their championship, defeating the ASCEagles 4-0 in the final round. Kristen Check scored eight goals in flour games with Krista Burdett and Cece Dawson adding two each.
No goals were scored on the under-13 team. Maranta Tano was the goalie with Hannah Vernetti at sweeper, Tori Sawhney, Laura Sigurdsson and Kerry Lennen on defense.
The under-14 girls tied two games and lost one. Carley Kordas and Liz Hallahan shared a shutout in goal in a 0-0 tie.
The under-14 boys tied two games and lost one. Kyle Terrill scored two goals in the tournament and Alex Slomer added one.
