Nile D. Coon, 79, of Ambridge and Clearfield died unexpectedly Sunday at UPMC Passavant Hospital.

Born in Goshen Township, Clearfield County, July 29, 1927, he was the son of Clarence D. and Anna White Coon.

He was a graduate of Clearfield High School, received a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Clarion University and a master's degree and a doctoral degree from the Pennsylvania State University in education. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa International.

Mr. Coon had been a teacher in the Centre Hall and Ambridge schools and also served as principal. He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a bureau director. He also taught at Lebanon Valley College at Harrisburg Center.

He served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, especially in the Philippine Island area. He and his four brothers served in WWII at the same time in the Army, Navy and Marines.

He was a member of the John E. Mair Lodge 729 F&AM in Mars, the Altoona Consistory and the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. He was also a member of the Clearfield Eagle, Elks, Moose, American Legion and VFW.

He was a member of the Goshen United Methodist Church and the Greater Shawville Parish in Clearfield.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Vaughan Coon, whom he married July 3, 1954; a brother, Kenneth L. Coon (Frances) of Goshen; two sisters, Joan W. Denochick of Clearfield and Buanna L. Cardinale of Warren, Ohio; nieces; nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Archie F., Glenn D. and C. Ross Coon.

<B>COON</B> — Friends of Nile D. Coon, who died Sunday, July 8, 2007, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the <B>McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home</B>, 238 Crowe Ave. Mars. Visitation also will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Goshen United Methodist Church, where services will follow with the Rev. Jennifer Heikes, church pastor and the Rev. Dr. Daniel Corll, pastor of the Mt. Pleasant United Presbyterian Church of Wexford, officiating.
