Butler Twp. champs again

9-10-year-olds win District 25

BUTLER TWP — Butler Township manager John Baranchak was wondering what his team could do if it was put in a tough situation.

After Saturday's 9-10-year-old District 25 Little League Baseball Championship game, he now knows the answer.

Butler Township trailed East Butler 2-0 entering the bottom of the first inning, but scored seven runs over the first three innings en route to a 10-3, six-inning victory at Adelman Field.

With the District 25 crown, Butler Township, which went 3-0 in the tournament following a bye, will advance to play in the section tournament this weekend at Warren.

East Butler opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning off Jesse Savisky.

"Jesse's an outstanding pitcher," said Baranchak. "It was a case of nerves in the first inning, some jitters. "He fell behind.

"I was pleased, though, because we hadn't given up a run in our last two games and I wanted to see how we'd handle the adversity."

"We were the first team to score against them in the tournament," said East Butler manager Jim Wobb, whose team rallied in its past two games to win and reach the final.

Nick Patten belted a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning, then Butler Township tacked on two in the second inning and three more in the third for a 7-3 lead.

Butler Township added three runs in the fifth inning to pull away.

Both teams finished with 10 hits apiece and both squads got hits from seven different players. Patten also added a single and double while Mark Gross had two doubles.

East Butler received three hits from Ryan Grady, two singles from Ian Steighner and a double from Chad White.

"We couldn't get the key hit," said Wobb. "We had the bases loaded three times and got three runs out of it."

"We definitely have a balanced hitting team," said Baranchak. "We go 12 deep and have very little drop-off."
