Gardasil (HPV vaccine)
Florence of Center Township is correct to direct criticism towards the Religious Right's opposition to the vaccine against Human papilloma virus. She insightfully writes that their opposition is indicative of an inferior view of women. I agree with her that it is certain that if the Religious Right's position was heeded, cervical cancer would continue to afflict women unabated. Florence also mentions the vaccine's use for men. In both the European Union and Australia the vaccine is approved for use in males. In addition to preventing spread of HPV (as men and women can both transmit the virus), the vaccine would be protective against penile and anal cancer in males. US approval will likely be forthcoming.
Finally, I agree with Florence that the Religious Right should cease its efforts to control the lives of women by opposing a genuinely pathbreaking scientific advance.
