Adult classes offered at SV

BC3 teams with school on courses

JACKSON TWP — Anyone thinking of taking up scuba diving to fulfill their fitness New Year's resolution need look no further than the pool at Seneca Valley High School.

Along with T'ai Chi Ch'üan, woodworking, fundamentals of investing and other classes, the diving course will be offered this spring as a noncredit enrichment course through Butler County Community College.

Curt Johns, dean of students at the Seneca Valley Middle School and program coordinator, said the district has offered adults enrichment classes since before he arrived in 1987. The partnership with BC3 has existed for about six years, he said.

"We do this to offer the community a chance to get involved, learn a new skill, improve a current skill or learn a new hobby," Johns said. "It's going to broaden your knowledge base."

With 16 courses slated for the spring semester, the program is nearly double that of years past.

"We're trying to grow it right now," Johns said.

Alex Gladis, director of BC3's Cranberry campus, said "We're in the situation where we'd like to see more Butler County residents participate in more noncredit classes."

The partnership provides residents more resources and more access to knowledgeable instructors, including Gladis, who will teach the class "Native Americans of the West."

Having lived on a Native American reservation on three occasions, Gladis said he will share artifacts and experiences with class participants.

The college also looks for people with innovative ideas or experiences to teach new courses, he added.

"I think they're very important because in the stressful society we live in, enrichment classes give people an opportunity to expand their professional or personal development," Gladis said.

"This gives them an opportunity to do something for themselves in a positive way."
