Butler Twp. falls to Maryland

Butler Township has used its offense to overpower a lot of opponents this season.

Against Maryland on Monday, BT got to see how the other half lives.

In their second game of the Little League Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn., Maryland limited Butler Township (a.k.a. Pennsylvania) to only three hits in a 4-2 victory.

Alex Ziegler smacked a two-run homer for Butler Township, his second in as many games at the regional, in the top of the sixth inning, but could not plate another run.

"This was probably the most disappointing game of our (playoff) run," said Butler Township coach John Baranchak. "Not that we needed to win, but we should have won.

"They had a pitcher that gave up just one hit until the sixth inning. I tip my cap to him, but we've faced better," he added.

Butler had a lot of running around to do after its 10-3 loss to New Jersey Sunday.

The teams had played at 8 p.m., then had responsibilities that kept them at the park until 11 p.m. They had to get back to the hotel, then got up at 7 a.m. for breakfast, then prepared for their 11 a.m. game Monday.

It didn't help matters that Butler Township fell behind 2-0 on a two-run homer by the third batter of the game.

"I wasn't concerned because we had a solid pitcher going for us (Dalton Koebler)," said Baranchak. "As it turned out, I wouldn't have thought four runs would beat us."

Delaware added single runs in the third and fifth innings, both coming on fielder's choices, to take a 4-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Cody West led off with a single for Butler Township. Following a flyout, Ziegler's home run cut the deficit in half and gave the squad a spark.

"We had the middle of our lineup coming up, including Dalton and David (Tompkins) and these guys can pop the ball at any time," said Baranchak.

Kevin Clapper had a bunt single earlier in the game to account for Butler Township's other hit. Koebler allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings and was charged with the loss.

Despite the second loss in the regional, Baranchak will not allow the team to dwell on the outcome so far.

"(Assistant coach) Jim Murray and I will not let them hang their heads," said Baranchak. "That's not an option at this point.

"We have two games left and I will assure you they will be ready. There was a combination of things that didn't help (Monday) but I don't want to make excuses. We didn't play our best ball."

Next up for Butler Township is Maryland, slated for 2 p.m. today.
