2 crowns are better than 1

KARNS CITY — After waiting 15 years to win the ABC Youth Football League Super Bowl, Karns City's senior division football program didn't have to wait long to win another one.

The Gremlins recently defeated Brockway, 22-16, in overtime to record their second consecutive Super Bowl crown.

The team of 11- and 12-year-olds recorded its second successive 9-1 season and kept the Jed Lankitus Traveling Trophy, presented annually to the Super Bowl winner.

"We lost our first game this year and didn't lose another one," coach Brad Greenawalt said. "We had a lot of guys who never played before, and it took them a while to settle in."

Karns City allowed just 49 points all year and shut out five opponents. Its final shutout win was 16-0 over Redbank Valley — the team that beat the Gremlins 12-0 to begin the campaign.

"This was a team that just played well together," said Bryan Fleeger, president of the Karns City Youth Football Association. "It was a solid team that had no stars."

Greenawalt agreed.

"Most winning youth football teams have that one kid who's bigger, stronger, faster or just better than everybody else," he said. "We had no one like that."

Jake Pyle scored all three touchdowns in the Super Bowl triumph over Brockway, including a 5-yard scoring run in overtime. Tyler Slagle was another quality running back.

The Gremlins played a 53 defense, sparked by defensive ends Bowen Bly and Joey Marshall.

"Tyler was our horse in the playoffs," Greenawalt said. "And our line got better as the season went on.

"All of these kids knew their roles. They learned them, got along and played that way. It was a fun team to coach."

The 24-player roster also included Ryan Pfeifer, Zach Barney, Chris Ellenberger, Seth Negley, Tyler Shreve, Zach Elliott, Jacob Fleeger, Dalton Bly, Alan Davis, Kyle Barger, Devin Rhoades, Christian Snow, Nate Ealy, Curtis Double, Brandon Krumpe, Brian Best, Brad Francis, James Krieble, Matthew Slagle, Dylan Pyle, Zachary Kelly and Jonathan Barlett.

"Our numbers were up a little bit this year," Fleeger said. "Winning it the year before helped increase interest in the program.

"Now that we've won it again, those numbers may continue to increase."

Helping Greenawalt coach the squad were Brian Greenawalt, Walt Barney, Tim Slagle, Brian Saelor and Jeff Pyle.

Karns City plays in the West Division of the ABC League with Slippery Rock, A-C Valley, Moniteau, Prospect and Grove City.

The league's East Division consists of East Brady, Brookville, Brockway, Redbank Valley, Shannock Valley and Punxsutawney.

"There are a lot of good programs in this league," Greenawalt said. "It's quite an achievement to win twice in a row.

"We were able to put 11 kids out on the field and they all did their jobs. It was fun watching them."
