SR man charged in theft of wallets
A Slippery Rock man faces 25 counts of theft, forgery and other charges for allegedly taking wallets and license plates at Butler County Community College and the Slippery Rock area.
District Judge Clifford Woessner on Wednesday issued a warrant for the arrest of Byron Benedict, 24, of 422 S. Main St. He has yet to be arrested.
State police said Benedict, between Sept. 7 and Feb. 8, took three wallets from unsecured lockers at the BC3 Field House in Butler Township.
The thefts occurred when the defendant and the owners of the wallets were students at the college.
Police said Benedict spent the more than $190 he took out of the wallets. He also used one victim's credit card to buy a tire at a Slippery Rock tire store, according to court documents.
Additionally, Benedict over the past two months allegedly took the license plates off three vehicles, and attached those plates at different times to his car.
Police on April 5 searched Benedict's apartment and found all three victims' wallets containing their credit cards and various identification cards.
The defendant admitted he took two wallets from the BC3 Field House, and acknowledged that he bought a tire with the credit card he took from one of the wallets, documents said.
"Benedict related that he was late in getting his GI Bill checks from the government and he stole the wallets for the cash just so he could get by," according to a police affidavit.
Police said Benedict also admitted taking the license plates from the three vehicles. He told authorities that police had previously confiscated his own license plate from his unregistered vehicle.
He is charged with six counts each of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, and three counts each of identity theft and unauthorized transfer or use of registration.
Additionally, he is charged with forgery, access device fraud, theft by deception, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving with a suspended license.
