Thursday — Stephen S. Schweiger III, 26, of Butler was charged with running from police in an incident earlier this month near the Emily Brittain Elementary School on North Washington Street.

Police said they spotted Schweiger, who was wanted on a bench warrant, just before 4 p.m. Feb. 6 walking on the 300 block of North Street. While looking to arrest him, according to court documents, police pulled up in a cruiser next to Schweiger but he ran off on North Washington Street toward the school.

An officer ran after the defendant on Walnut, telling him to stop multiple times. The chase continued onto North Church Street and into a backyard, where Schweiger fell on a gravel driveway.

He was arrested and placed in the Butler County Prison on the bench warrant as well as separate charges in connection with an arrest warrant that Cranberry Township police had for him in a simple assault case.

Schweiger was arraigned Thursday on a charge of flight to avoid apprehension, trial or punishment in the Butler case. Bail was set at $5,000.

10:59 p.m. Feb. 13 — Steven W. Dunmire, 25, of Mars was caught with suspected crack cocaine following a traffic stop in the area of Broad and West Brady streets. Police said they pulled him over for not using his left turn signal.

An officer, while speaking to Dunmire, noticed on the rear seat floor what appeared to be an empty stamp bag commonly used to package drugs, according to court documents.

A subsequent search of the car turned up suspected crack on the driver’s seat and a small scale in the center console, according to court documents.

Dunmire is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and failing to use turn signals.

9:05 p.m. Thursday — Police arrested an Indiana man after he allegedly assaulted a woman at a Grove City Road apartment

Sherman T. Sherwood, 30, of Gary was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Police said Sherwood was gone when they got to the home. An ambulance crew tended to the victim, who was taken to Grove City Medical Center for injuries to her neck, hand and foot.

Slippery Rock University police assisted borough police and eventually found the defendant. He was arrested and turned over to Slippery Rock police.

A witness told police she saw Sherwood assaulting the victim and that he had her in a chokehold from behind, documents said. The witness, who called 911, also reported seeing “large amounts of blood about the room.”

The defendant admitted that he and the woman got into an argument, police said; however, he claimed she punched him in the face, leaving him with a split lip.
