Thursday — Brittney L. Darby, 31, of Butler was charged in a shoplifting incident last month at the Dollar General store on North Main Street.Darby about 12:50 p.m. Oct. 10 allegedly took lip gloss and body spray, valued at $21.72, before leaving the store, according to court documents.A short time later, she showed up with her mother at the police station and confessed to stealing the items, document said.Darby, who has one prior shoplifting conviction, is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft.5:55 p.m. Wednesday — Zachary J. Hughes, 33, of Butler was caught with medication after police found him passed out or sleeping on the basketball court outside of Butler Middle School on East North Street.Police said it took several shakes to awaken Hughes, who appeared impaired, according to court documents. A subsequent search turned five clonazepam pills inside a container in the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt.Hughes is charged with possession of a controlled substance and public drunkenness.Tuesday — Miranda C. Flak, 26, of Butler was charged with last month's break-in of a vehicle at a fast-food restaurant at Pullman Square. Stolen from the vehicle about 12:40 p.m. Oct. 28 was a bank card and coupons.Police said surveillance footage from the store and tips via social media helped them identify the defendant and the vehicle she was driving.On Nov. 1, an officer stopped her Nov. 1 walking on Shore Street at South Chestnut Street. She admitted that she broke into the car and took the coupons, police said. She is charged with theft from a vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

Oct. 29 — Anthony M. Depaoli III, 21, of Grove City was charged in connection with a September altercation in Slippery Rock Township that left another man with a broken nose and other injuries.Police said they learned of the incident abut 9:15 p.m. Sept. 28 while on patrol in the area of University Village. They eventually spoke to a man who recounted being “jumped” by someone he did not know while walking on Kiester Road after leaving a party.A woman walking nearby told police that she saw the alleged attack. She described the attacker.Police a short time later police found Depaoli, who matched the attacker's description, according to court documents. He admitted that he repeatedly struck the victim after the victim “flipped (him) off,” documents said.The defendant appeared to be intoxicated, according to police, who searched his back pack and found 12 cans of beer.Police said they eventually learned that the victim was treated at the hospital for a broken nose, chipped tooth, a cut, bruises and other injuries in the alleged assault.Depaoli is charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment, public drunkenness and underage drinking or possession of alcohol.Oct. 29 — Michael J. McAlister, 37, of Harrisville was charged with drugged driving in connection with a July vehicle crash in Franklin Township.The two-vehicle wreck happened about 7:30 p.m. July 13 on Eagle Mill Road, police said, and left McAlister's car on its roof. Troopers said they found the defendant standing beside his car.He smelled of alcohol, according to court documents, and he admitted to possessing and taking the prescription drug sertraline. Police eventually took him to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.Toxicology results confirmed he had showed he had sertraline in his system as well as desmethylsertraline and marijuana. Additionally, his blood-alcohol level was 0.114 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.McAlister is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, DUI, driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, possession of a controlled substance and a small amount of marijuana, failing to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.Oct. 29 — Matthew J. Covert, 41, of Grove City was charged with assaulting another man in Slippery Rock Township. He allegedly punched the victim in the face during an argument about 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at a home on Smith Valley Road.The other man had two teeth knocked out, according to court documents, and his nose was swollen. Covert is charged with simple assault and harassment.

Friday — Police reported they are investigating the theft of a cell phone last month from a store in East Franklin Township. The phone, according to a police report, was taken about 6 p.m. Oct. 19 from a customer's shopping cart at the Hilltop Plaza Dollar Tree.
