8:19 p.m. Monday — Scott A. Koosher, 53, of Butler was arrested for felony shoplifting after he allegedly stole two packages of ham and one package of lasagna from the Dollar General store on North Main Street.

Police said they were called for the alleged shoplifter, according to court documents, who left the store and was seen heading on East North Street. An officer spotted him on Cedar Street near East Brady Street.

The officer stopped him near a dumpster. On the dumpster lid, police found one package each of ham and lasagna. Koosher denied stealing any items from the store and he told police the items on the lid were not his, documents said.

Police took the suspect back to the store where the manager identified him as the shoplifter. The value of the alleged stolen merchandise is $9.75.

Koosher was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft, and released on his own recognizance.

In Pennsylvania, retail theft is usually a summary or misdemeanor offense. But it is upgraded to a third-degree felony regardless of the stolen property’s value when a suspect has at least two prior convictions for the same crime.
