July 24 — Shawn P. Nolan, 45, of Butler Township was charged with being more than three times the legal limit for alcohol stemming from a July incident on Coal Hollow Road.

Police said they found Nolan’s pickup truck about 1:20 a.m. July 3 stuck on an embankment. Officers earlier had gotten a call for a pickup “all over the road,” according to court documents.

When the defendant got out of the door, police said, an officer had to step in and stop him from falling down.

Police said Nolan was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, for a blood test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.30 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

In addition to driving under the influence, he is charged with failing to keep right.

Monday — Christopher W. Schmidt, 39, of Butler was charged with shoplifting $411.97 worth of underground cables at the Lowe’s store at Moraine Pointe Plaza on July 24. A repeat offender, he is facing a felony count of retail theft.

Schmidt is already charged in a suspected shoplifting July 17 at the same Lowe’s store where he is accused of taking $69.38 in merchandise, according to a police report. In that case, he was charged July 24 with felony retail theft and misdemeanor receiving stolen property.

July 26 — Police charged Austin P. Hayes, 20, of Gibsonia with allegedly shoplifting $152.91 worth of groceries earlier this month at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

Hayes was seen on video surveillance failing to scan several items while using the self-checkout register, according to police. He is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft.

4:30 p.m. Sunday — Michael J. Zawadzki, 64, of Butler was caught allegedly asking customers for gas and money at the Sheetz convenience store on Route 8 in Center Township, after being previously advised that he was not permitted there. He is charged with defiant trespass.

[naviga:h3]Middlesex Twp Police[/naviga:h3]

July 21 — Edward Jaicks, 60, of Adams Township was charged with driving under the influence in connection with a July traffic stop on List Hill Road.

Police said they found Jaicks’ car stopped on the side of the road at a gravel pull off near the Middlesex-Adams Township line. Moments earlier, a motorist had called 911 to say he was following reckless driver that nearly struck a truck, according to court documents.

Before police got to his car, Jaicks pulled out of the gravel area. Officers stopped him a short time later.

The defendant appeared impaired and said he had “a couple of beers,” documents said. Police said they found a half can of beer on the seat near the driver.

He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests and was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for a blood test, which showed his blood alcohol level was 0.113 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

Jaicks is charged with DUI, driving with an open containing of alcohol and failing to use turn signals.

July 18 — Dann K. Mathison, 53, of Jefferson Township was arrested for suspected drugged driving in connection with an earlier pedestrian crash on Dinnerbell Road at West Jefferson Road.

Police said Mathison was traveling east on Dinnerbell Road and approaching West Jefferson Road about 1:50 a.m. June 22 when 26-year-old Ian Lark walked into the path of the defendant’s car.

Mathison told police that he was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.

Lark, who was wearing dark clothing with no reflective gear, suffered serious injuries. He was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.

Police while speaking to Mathison suspected he was impaired. He was eventually taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.

Police later found a baggie containing a small amount of suspected marijuana and a marijuana pipe in the vehicle.

Toxicology reports subsequently showed he had marijuana in his system, according to court documents.

Mathison is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

[naviga:h3]State Police, Butler[/naviga:h3]

4:40 p.m. Tuesday — A Lawrence County woman was hurt when her car struck a guardrail on Interstate 79 just south of Evans Road in Jackson Township. Stephanie L. Glasser, 25, of New Castle, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered an apparent minor injury. Glasser told police she lost control of her northbound car when the front, driver’s side tire “blew out.”

July 26 — Police charged a Pittsburgh man with driving on drugs in connection with a July traffic stop for going too slow on Interstate 79 in Lancaster Township.

The suspect, Beau Cash Marquis, 41, was stopped about 6:40 p.m. July 3 traveling 50 mph in a 70 mph zone, police said. He also was swerving in his travel lane.

He is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving too slow for conditions, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.

[naviga:h3]State Police, Kittanning[/naviga:h3]

3:18 p.m. Tuesday — An Ohio man was hurt when his motorcycle crashed on Route 422 in North Buffalo Township. Shannon W. Alston, 34, of Painesville was taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township with unknown injuries.

Police said Alston lost control of his Harley-Davidson Street Glide on Route 422 east, about one mile east of the Route 28 on-ramp, and wrecked in the median. He was wearing a helmet. His cycle had to be towed.

Monday — Police are looking for an unknown thief or thieves who made off with a washing machine taken from an apartment building on Clay Avenue in Pine Township, Armstrong County. The washing machine, described as a white, Crosley top-loading model with the serial number CAW 9244, was taken between July 24 and 26.

Police are asking the public to monitor social media sites for any suspicious appliances for sale, and to call the barracks at 724-543-2011.
