2 suspects facing trial for drug trafficking

They allegedly sold heroin

Two suspected drug dealers face trial on charges they sold heroin out of a Butler apartment.

District Judge Pete Shaffer ordered Miguel Buckner, 21, of Michigan held for court on drug trafficking charges at a preliminary hearing Monday.

Buckner’s co-defendant, Brandon M. Backus, 28, of Butler, waived similar charges to court after opting not to have his hearing.

The Butler County Drug Task Force arrested the men May 1 after a warrant search of the Shore Street apartment where they were staying turned up 500 stamp bags of suspected heroin and other drugs.

Butler police Sgt. Ben Spangler, working for the task force, said both defendants were home when officers served the warrant.

He testified that Buckner and a women were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom.

In the bedroom, Spangler said, officers found two stamp bags of heroin and a bag of suspected Ecstasy inside a men’s high-top basketball shoe.

A gym bag in the same bedroom netted 498 more bags of heroin, he said.

Backus, who was downstairs with two others, a 24-year-old man and 16-year-old boy, later allegedly incriminated himself and implicated Buckner.

“He admitted he and Buckner were selling heroin out of the house,” Spangler testified.

The 20-year-old woman who was found with Buckner also told officers that both defendants had been dealing heroin out of the apartment, according to court documents.

Both men are charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy.

Buckner and Backus remain in Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail and $50,000 bail, respectively.
