Group awards teaching grants

BUTLER TWP - The Butler Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation has awarded its Creative Teaching Grants for 2004-05.

The grants are awarded to teachers in the Butler School District who have submitted applications for the funding, which is to be used to enhance the classroom experience through a hands-on lesson.

The recipients were announced Monday night at the Butler School Board meeting.

A total of $6,651.02 was awarded to 12 recipients. Money for the grants came from either the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation - which conducts fund-raising events throughout the year - or through donations from private citizens in the Butler community.

Recipients, along with the uses of the grant, the amount of their grant, and who funded it are:

Center Township Elementary School, Side-by-Side music enrichment through mentoring and artist-in-residence - $500. Funded by the Victor K. Phillips Endowment.

Center Township Elementary School, environmental expedition - $650.54, funded with $500 donation from the Patricia McTighe Kelly Endowment and with $150.54 from the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Center Township Elementary School, Author's Party - $500.31, from the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Butler Jr. High School, elements, mixtures and compounds lab - $499.95, through the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Center Township Elementary School, book publishing - $445, funded through the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Oakland Township Elementary School, orienteering - $511, funded through the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Butler Sr. High School, enhancing choirs with instruments - $500, funded through the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Emily Brittain Elementary School, Spellbound: Using ASL to increase student success - $513, funded by the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Meridian Elementary School, math madness bags - $682.58, with $500 funded by the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Butler Jr. High School, Smart music software for practice and improvement performance - $727.50, with $609.67 being funded by the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.
