SRU loses in ECAC basketball semifinal

A 9-0 second-half run by Caldwell College proved to be a decisive blow in a 73-66 victory over Slippery Rock University in the semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament Sunday at Fairfield (Conn.) University.

The defeat ends The Rock’s season with an overall record of 20-11.

SRU held a slim 41-38 edge with 13:23 left in the game before Caldwell’s spurt gave it the lead for good.

Forward Maurice Lewis-Briggs led SRU with 17 points and added eight rebounds.

Tabari Perry added 14 points while Antonio Butler scored 11 and Sa’Quan Davis 10.

Caldwell featured five players scoring in double digits, led by Wyatt Polk’s 18.

Baseball

SRU tallied a pair of wins over the weekend in Florida, defeating West Chester 5-1 on Saturday and Minnesota-Crookston 14-4 Sunday afternoon.

For the second straight day, The Rock (10-4) was fast out of the gate, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Minnesota-Crookston.

Redshirt freshman first baseman and Seneca Valley graduate Carson Kessler had a pair of RBI-doubles while Will Kengor and Adam Urbania both doubled and tripled and scored three runs.

Anthony Naso earned the win, striking out six and walking three while allowing three earned runs on eight hits in his seven innings of work.

In Saturday’s victory, Garret Peterson earned the win after allowing just one hit, striking out three and walking three in six scoreless innings.

Jordan Faretta smacked a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first inning for the only runs SRU would need. Alex Bell, a junior catcher, had The Rock’s only extra-base hit with a double.

Track and Field

Sam Taylor sparked SRU’s women with a win in the javelin (46.68 meters) at the Coastal Carolina University Invitational.

Also earning first place were Emily Moroco in the unseeded portion of the 200-meter dash (26.07) and London Parris in the unseeded 400 hurdles (1:07.5).
