Celebration marks 40 years

Butler County Community College will celebrate 40 years since it opened its doors with an event on Tuesday.

Speakers and activities will mark the occasion, which begins with the dedication of Founders Hall.

The hall, formerly the Convocation Center, was built in 1970, This summer it was renovated and includes new ceiling tiles, lighting, carpeting, a parquet dance floor and a new kitchen for catered events. It was renamed to honor those who worked to get the college started — men like Jim Green, Gail Rose and Clarence Brown, to name a few.

Four honorary chairs will speak at the dedication, along with Butler County Commissioner Scott Lowe; Lucille Shapiro of the Alumni Council; David Huseman, economics professor; Amy Cannon, Executive Council president and Tom Smith, editor of The Cube, the student newspaper.

The honorary chairs for the 40th anniversary are: Ray Steffler, chairman of the trustees; Nancy Murrin, former trustee and Foundation Board member; Doris Rose, alumna and wife of founder Gail Rose; and Green, the former Butler County commissioner who helped establish sponsorship by Butler County.

Students at three off-campus centers will have their own celebrations with cake and punch between noon and 2 p.m.
