MIDDLESEX TWP — A repeat drunken driver was more than three times the legal limit for alcohol Friday evening when he was arrested for the same crime on Denny Road, police said.

David P. Adams, 57, of Middlesex Township was traveling west about 6:55 p.m. when his pickup truck crossed over and off the road and nearly hit a mailbox, according to court documents.

The truck then again crossed into the oncoming lane before traveling off the road a second time.

Police said an officer activated his emergency lights and siren and tried to pull over the defendant, who did not stop and continued driving west on Denny Road.

Adams eventually stopped after pulling into the driveway of his home on the same road. Police said he reeked of alcohol and appeared intoxicated.

When he got out of the truck, documents said, he nearly fell to the ground. He admitted that he could not perform field sobriety tests for police.

A breath test subsequently showed his blood-alcohol was 0.288 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Police said Adams has two prior convictions for driving under the influence in Pennsylvania. He also was previously charged with DUI in Utah and Indiana but police did not immediately know the outcome of those out-of-state arrests.

He was arraigned Saturday on charges of DUI and careless driving, and released on nonmonetary bail.

But while free, Adams must wear a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor device, which is worn around the ankle and monitors perspiration for alcohol content levels.

His' preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 9 at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.
