SLIPPERY ROCK — More than a year after construction started, Slippery Rock Community Park's trail will get its official ceremony Wednesday.

Officials from Slippery Rock borough, township and school district will join the park board members in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. at the park.

The 1.8-mile trail that takes walkers around the park cost almost $300,000, according to Mary Messer, park director.

“We are very fortunate to be able to do it,” Messer said.

Messer said the majority of the trail was finished last summer, so many have already enjoyed walking the path.

“Parents will hop on the walking trail while their children are at practice,” Messer said.

The trail passes the elementary school, the Slippery Rock Borough Historical Cemetery and Evergreen Court, along with the different athletic fields in the park.

Messer said she's heard from many teachers who would walk the trail in their free time.

“It's really nice because it's accessible in many areas of the park,” Messer said. “They appreciate to walk in a safe environment at the park.”

The trail is also dog-friendly with receptacles along the way.

Tom McPherson, member of the park and borough council boards, said the trail also provides nice scenery.

“I think our park is a hidden gem. A lot of people don't know it's there,” McPherson said. “It's really a nice park.”
