Police probe break-in, shooting

18-year-old injured, flown to hospital

Butler police are investigating a shooting and an armed home invasion, both believed to have occurred early Sunday. But investigators still do not know if the incidents are related.

Authorities acknowledge they have not nailed down where a shooting occurred that left 18-year-old Lamont Franklin Jr. hospitalized in Pittsburgh with non-life-threatening injuries.

No one was injured in the weekend home invasion on Negley Avenue in the city's Island neighborhood. A 36-year-old woman and her two children who live there were home at the time.

The woman described three masked men — one with a handgun — breaking into the home. But she apparently did not immediately notify authorities about what happened.

Other questions remained unanswered Monday, and no arrests were made. A motive for either incident apparently is unclear as well.

“We're looking at several angles, trying to connect the dots and piece this together,” police Capt. Jim Hollobaugh said Monday.

Franklin spoke to a detective following surgery Sunday and is cooperating in the investigation, according to police. But authorities remained tight-lipped Monday about what he told them.

The investigation began at 6:17 a.m. Sunday when a man who lives on the 300 block of Liberty Street called 911 to report hearing about six gunshots.

Negley Avenue and Liberty Street are in close proximity to each other.

“He was inside and heard the shots,” Hollobaugh said, “but he didn't know where they were coming from.”

Three minutes later, a 911 dispatcher got a call reporting a shooting victim. The caller was Franklin's sister, who lives on Brown Avenue in Butler Township near the city line.

Franklin had showed up there with a gunshot wound in a “central location” on his body, possibly the chest or ribs. Investigators said it was a “through-and-through” wound.

Police estimate the home is about one-half mile from the area of Liberty Street, where the initial caller reported shots fired shortly before.

The dispatcher provided medical instructions to Franklin's sister about what to do for his wound until police and an ambulance arrived.

Hollobaugh said Franklin subsequently was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was later flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital.

While investigating the incident, police said they learned about the home invasion, but not from the victim.

“She never reported it until we showed up,” Hollobaugh said.

Based on the woman's account, police believe the home invasion occurred a relatively short time before officers arrived.

The woman told police she was home with her children when three males kicked in the back door and entered the home. She recounted that all three suspects wore black bandannas over their faces, and one of the males was also wearing a full black mask.

One of them also allegedly had a gun, described by the woman as a black pistol.

The trio eventually left and reportedly did not take anything. Police said the woman is cooperating in their investigation.

Officers canvassed the Island and found some residents who heard numerous gunshots around the same time as when the first report came in about gunfire.

A search for other evidence, including bullet casings, slugs and blood, apparently turned up nothing.

Meanwhile, separate investigations into the shooting and home invasion continue.

“We're still investigating to determine a possible connection between the two incidents,” Hollobaugh said.
