Butler Area reduces years for retirement health care benefits
The Butler Area School Board once again will reduce the years of service required for teachers to qualify for post-retirement health care benefits from 18 to 17 years.
School district Superintendent Brian White told the school board Monday that one teacher requested the change, but a number of teachers qualify for the benefits.
The move would benefit the district financially because the teachers who retired would be replaced by teachers with lower salaries, he said.
White said he will prepare a memorandum of understanding about the offer and advertise it.
Only a few teachers took advantage of the same offer when it was made last year, he added.
In other business, the board reelected Al Vavro as president and elected Jennifer Cummings as vice president during a reorganization meeting held before the regular meeting. Cummings replaces Mary Waggoner as vice president.
The board reappointed the Dillon McCandless King Coulter and Graham law firm of Butler as solicitor for 2021 at a cost of $185 an hour, a $5 increase.
The board also appointed Bill Jones, president and CEO of Penn United Technologies of Cabot, as one of the district representatives on the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School Authority Board. He replaces Arthur Bernardi, who resigned.
