Adams opens sewer extension project bids

A new sewer extension will run from the existing Township Pavilion in Adams Township Community Park to a future picnic shelter there.
Lowest proposals sent for review

Fourteen bids were opened by supervisors Monday night for a park sewer extension project that township leaders discussed earlier this month.

“We have a lot of people bidding,” said Russell Ford, supervisor chairman. “This is good.”

The extension will run from the existing Township Pavilion to a future picnic shelter in the park.

The shelter will be going out for bids in February and can be constructed concurrently, if needed.

The highest bid came in at $160,836 from J.S. Bova Excavating. The lowest bid was submitted by Tim Fouse Excavating at $69,885, resulting in a $90,951 difference between the highest and lowest bidders.

Murin & Murn Inc. and J5 Construction submitted the next lowest bids at $78,990 and $82,199.50, respectively.

Supervisors voted to send the three lowest bids to the township solicitor and engineer for review.

“If we find something wrong with one, we can move right to (the second),” Ford said.

Ford specifically explained the bids will be reviewed for bond accuracy and time lines.

The project can begin as soon as the contractor is approved and ready to work.

“We have an opportunity to get moving on this project,” Ford said. “We want to get moving.”

Ron Olsen, township engineer, said it seems to be a good time in the year for contractors to get work done quickly. “Almost all of them are anxious to start,” Olsen said.

Olsen said contractors he's talked to have indicated they've been busy up to now.

With projects from last year winding down, those contractors are now looking for new work.

The township's bid package stipulates the winning bidder has 90 days to complete the extension project.

Olsen estimated the work could probably be done in as little as 30 days.

Combined with the low bid proposals, there was a sense Monday night that supervisors approved of the project's progress.

“Those numbers make the board very happy,” Ford said.
