Transit authority seeks state funding

Rebuilding four bus stop shelters and installing two new ones are among nearly $3 million in capital projects the Butler Transit Authority is asking the state to pay for.

Authority board members on Tuesday submitted the capital project list to the Department of Transportation.

Shelters at the post office in Lyndora, the Donut Connection on Center Avenue, Park Manor and Woody Drive would be replaced with new shelters. Two new shelters would be built on Whitestown Road at a total cost of $79,675, said John Paul, authority executive director.

The existing shelters haven't been updated in 20 years, Paul said.

The most expensive project is building an addition on the authority's office and bus garage in the Pullman Center Business Park and building a park and ride and a waiting area at a cost of $1.5 million.

Buying a $688,616 multiagency enterprise resource planning software package, which includes accounting, capital management, maintenance, human resources, procurement, planning, payroll and other tools, is included on the list.

The 5-year-old Avail system, which records ridership information and tracks buses, would be upgraded at a cost of $469,321.

Buying five sets of tire chains that can be automatically deployed when needed on snowy roads for $11,000 is also on the list. The commuter buses that provide service to Pittsburgh would get the chains.

In other business, the authority approved a five-year agreement with Johnson Controls to maintain the office and garage heating, air conditioning, fire and security alarms and other building controls. The cost starts at $4,524 for this year and increases annually to $5,714 in 2024.
