Bradley Duke of Butler and Heather Young of Karns City were presented recently with $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarships from the Butler Wal-Mart.

The scholarship awards were based on high academic achievement and involvement in school, work and community activities.

Bradley is preparing to attend Saint Francis University, where he will study to become a physician's assistant. He graduated from Butler High School.Heather will study elementary education at Edinboro University. She is a Karns City High School graduate.

<B>Kelly Smith</B>, a senior industrial mathematics major at Clarion (Pa.) University, recently received a $500 Helen and Lawrence Smith Scholarship and a $2,000 William and Elizabeth Hart Scholarship.She is a daughter of Lynn Smith of Slippery Rock and is a graduate of Slippery Rock High School.Applicants for the Helen and Lawrence Smith Scholarship must be full-time students at the junior or senior level majoring in library science or mathematics, must have completed at least 64 credits, and have a 3.0 or higher grade-point average.Applicants for the William and Elizabeth Hart Scholarship must major in mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography/earth science, or biology and have completed 45 credits. They must have a QPA of 3.0 overall and 3.3 in mathematics and science course work.

<B>Amber Benscoter</B>of Cranberry Township, a Seneca Valley High School graduate, received an achievement award recently by SuperSibs!, a national nonprofit organization that supports brothers and sisters of children with cancer.Amber was one of 114 chosen out of 1,500 based on judging in four categories: a personal essay outlining lessons learned, a letter from sibling to sibling, a written recommendation from a non-parent, and academic achievement.She is the daughter of Roger and Debra Benscoter.
