Maternity care at hospital hailed

Butler Memorial Hospital saw national recognition Friday for its maternity care.

The hospital was ranked as one of 231 hospitals listed as Best Maternity Hospitals of 2020 by Newsweek, which partnered with the national nonprofit Leapfrog to compile the list.

“Butler Health System is proud of this achievement, and we thank our great Maternal Services team,” said Ken DeFurio, BHS president and CEO, in a news release Friday.

According to BMH’s listing, the hospital delivers about 973 babies annually, and it received an “A” grade for its level of care.

“Best Maternity Care Hospitals are an elite group of hospitals from across the country,” said Nancy Cooper, editor-in-chief of Newsweek.

The standards on which the hospitals are graded are set by a panel of national experts from Leapfrog.

The experts weigh each hospital on a set of values that includes lower rates of early elective delivery, episiotomy and Nulliparous, Term, Singleton, Vertex C-sections. Hospitals also receive credit for their compliance in areas such as newborn bilirubin screening before discharge and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section.

“This recognition is affirmation of the excellent care provided by our team of OB/GYN physicians, nurses and support staff,” DeFurio said.

The full list of recipients will appear in the magazine’s July 24 edition.
