Strawberry Days festival set for this weekend

Event organizers have made some minor tweaks since last year's Strawberry Days Festival in Grove City.

GROVE CITY — Event organizers said the 28th annual Strawberry Days Festival will be “berry nice” just like its predecessors.

Mary Kay Mattocks, the festival chairwoman, said the event hasn't changed much in its history because people seem to like the way the festival is presented.

“It's one of those festivals, that when it's not broken, you don't fix it,” Mattocks said.

The event takes place all day from Friday through Sunday at Memorial Park in Grove City.

Despite having a winning formula, there are some differences.

The food tent will be stuffed this weekend at the festival. The festival has had more vendors over the last few years, but they have never maxed out like they will be this year.

“This year, we have all 20 food booths taken,” Mattocks said.Mattocks said having more vendors boosts their variety, which is structured by the festival's committee.“We have everything from your sandwich to french fries to desserts,” she said. “Every booth has a different food item, and there's not any duplication.”Mattocks said they are adding more sports games and creating a Sports Lot, where visitors can test their skills. The games are run by Grove City High School athletes, the dunking contest by the girls softball team, the hoop shoot by the boys basketball team and putting greens by the golf teams.Mattocks said the event will feature some new craft vendors too, and there will be plenty of opportunities for children, such as caricatures, balloon artists and face painting.

“We try to have as much free as possible, so the parents don't spend a lot of money,” she said.Entertainment will kick off with Junction PA at 1 p.m. on the main stage followed by The McCabes at 4 p.m. and The Stonehorses Band at 7 p.m.Saturday's band line up is The Basement Band at 1 p.m., TreeBeard Brown at 4 p.m. and The Epics at 7 p.m.Performing Sunday will be Crosswind at 11 a.m. and Catro at 1 p.m.Mattocks said the festival is a place for residents and visitors to have some fun and unwind.“It's more or less to provide an entertainment for Grove City and the surrounding Tri-State area,” she said.
