LOS ANGELES — Lindsey Buckingham underwent open heart surgery that left the former Fleetwood Mac guitarist with damaged vocal cords.
Buckingham's publicist said in a statement Friday that he experienced chest pains last week and was taken to the hospital where he had the life-saving procedure. Buckingham is recovering at home with his family.
The 69-year-old rocker's wife, Kristen Buckingham, said on social media that it's unclear if the damage after the surgery is permanent. She says the past year has been stressful, but she is thankful her husband is still alive.
Last year, Buckingham sued Fleetwood Mac after being kicked off the band's new tour. The guitarist-songwriter is seeking his share of the tour income because he felt he was able to perform.
Fleetwood Mac disputes the allegations made by Buckingham.

PASADENA, Calif. — “Saturday Night Live” star Aidy Bryant says she was drawn to the Hulu series “Shrill” because of the chance to play a woman who is more than her weight.
The six-part comedy is based on Lindy West's memoir, “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman,” which Bryant said struck a chord with her.
Bryant said she identified with the book's portrayal of a world that tells a heavy woman she's wrong for existing the way she does, even if she has a lot to offer.
But Bryant said “Shrill” isn't what she called “a fat festival.” Instead, she said, it's like any TV show that follows the life of its character, she said Monday.
It also addresses the issue of abortion, as does West's memoir.
“Shrill” debuts March 15 on Hulu.

LONDON — A woman who was injured in a car accident involving Prince Philip says the roads will be safer now that the 97-year-old royal has given up his driver's license.
Buckingham Palace said Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has voluntarily surrendered his license “after careful consideration.”
Emma Fairweather, who suffered a broken wrist in the Jan. 17 accident, told the Sunday Mirror newspaper that “it's the right thing to do. Undoubtedly the roads will be safer now.”
Philip was behind the wheel of a Land Rover near the royal family's Sandringham estate in eastern England when he smashed into another car. Fairweather and the woman driving the car were injured but a 9-month-old baby was not.
Prosecutors say they will consider Philip's decision as they decide whether to charge him in the crash.
