An eight-inch water main broke on North Washington Street in Evans City, leaving residents without water for part of the morning on Tuesday. The main broke around 2 a.m., said Marty Fabian, water and sewer manager.

EVANS CITY — Water pressure returned to the borough Tuesday morning, after a water main broke around 2 a.m.

The eight-inch pipe broke near 418 N. Washington St., cutting off borough residents' access to water and flooding the street. Crews worked to block the street and repair the pipe to restore service.

“At this point the whole town should be pretty much back to normal,” said Marty Fabian, water and sewer authority director on Tuesday.

The authority also issued a boil water advisory for 48 hours. Residents are told to boil water for at least one minute before drinking. Water boiled for a minute could be cooled and stored for later use.

Some Evans City residents may continue to experience lower water pressure in areas of higher elevation while crews work to mend the pipe.

At the epicenter of the break was Lindsey Choura, whose yard was quickly engulfed by water from the burst pipe. At around 6:20 a.m., Choura said she noticed her water wasn't working.

“They said it was a water break,” she said. “I walked outside to see if we had a break somewhere, and there was a giant hole and our driveway was like a trench with water.”

Unable to get her car down the driveway, Choura said she walked to her father's house to borrow a vehicle.

“It's a good thing he lives only a couple blocks away,” she said.

When she returned from work, Choura said water service was restored, though at lower pressure, and water and sewer authority workers were filling in the hole where the pipe broke. She said she's hoping the damage to her property is not permanent.

“They didn't have to do anything to the pool. We'll probably just have to plant grass seed and re-gravel the driveway,” she said.

Down the road, employees at the Evans City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 259 said they mainly noticed a drop in water pressure, but they had enough for the facility to function.

“We were able to open up,” said Patty Martin, a VFW employee, on Tuesday afternoon.

Even after service was restored to the borough, Martin said water pressure at the VFW remained low.

“It's not real powerful,” Martin said.

The Evans City Water and Sewer Authority also set up water buffalo stations at the police and fire stations. The boil advisory is expected to end late Thursday morning.
