Fall in Western Pennsylvania means colorful scenery, a nip in the air, apple cider, and of course, a chance to scare yourself silly at “haunted” attractions.

This year, Butler County residents have numerous options for chills and thrills, from haunted houses to corn mazes.

Pirates of the Cari “Beacon”

Where: 231 Beacon Road, Renfrew

When: Fridays and Saturdays from dusk to 10 p.m., Sept. 29 to Oct. 28

Krelow Farms is running its 16th annual haunted house corn maze at The Beacon Hotel. This year the maze has a pirate theme, including an impersonator of Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

There will be a large haunted house to walk through, and then patrons hop on a wagon and brave the corn maze, which is 15 acres, in the shape of a ship, and will feature actors doing their best to elicit fright. On opening weekend, visitors can go through the house and maze twice at no extra cost. Proceeds will go toward helping the family of Saxonburg native and national shot-put athlete Jordan Geist get to the 2020 Olympics.

Eerie Acres Farm

Eerie Acres Farm will run its first haunted house to frighten and delight patrons. The house will feature fog, strobe lights, extreme darkness, loud noises, uneven or narrow walkways and wet or damp surfaces for people to face. There will be a special “Feast and Fright Night” on Oct. 7. The night will include food vendors including Cummings Coffee & Candy, Pennie's Bake Shop & Espresso Bar, Donny B's BBQ, Nachos Al Estilo De, Pizza Joe's and Grandma Cyl's Homemade Pierogi.

Cheeseman Fright Farm

Where: 147 Kennedy Road, Portersville

When: Dusk to 10 p.m. or until last ticketed guest has ridden, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 22 to Oct. 29, excluding Sept. 24.

Cost: $20 per person on Fridays and Saturdays, $15 per person on Sundays, and a “fright pass” for $30.

The scary staple that is Cheeseman Fright Farm returns with a haunted hayride, a corn maze, and various walk-through attractions. Isolated by more than 650 acres, this is meant to be a heart-pounding experience for teenagers and adults. Children ages 12 or younger must be accompanied by an adult. There also will be an area provided to have bonfires. Firewood and a picnic table will be provided, and is free for groups with 35 or more general admission tickets and $150 for groups with less. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis and 48 hours of advanced registration is required on the farm's website. There will also be the Cheeseman Pumpkin Festival, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays in October. The festival will feature a petting zoo, seasonal items including pumpkins to buy, a hay ride and a hay maze.

Spooky Stories at Old Stone House

Where: 2865 William Flinn Highway, Slippery Rock

Cost: $8 per person, free for children ages 4 and younger

For a more laid-back experience, Spooky Stories will feature the talents of Mary Morgan Smith, who will delve into her repertoire of tales to convey with interactive storytelling. There also will be historical re-enactments and a show by performers of the Miracle Elixir Sideshow. Slippery Rock University theater students will read short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, and the Jennings Environmental Center will be on hand for its bat exhibit. The event will feature face-painting, an apple cider press demonstration, candle-dipping, sugar cookies and folk music.
