A Portersville man is accused of stealing a firearm from a Butler Township gun store.

Logan McPeak, 21, was charged Thursday, July 17, by Butler Township police with one felony count each of theft, retail theft and carrying a firearm without a license following an incident Thursday.

Police responded to Down Range Supply on Evans City Road for the reported theft. A store employee told police McPeak had entered the store while the employee was tending to other customers, reached behind a display case and removed a .22-caliber Maxim Defense internally suppressed pistol, according to charging documents.

When McPeak exited the store, the firearm’s sale tag could be seen hanging from his pants, police said.

Police said McPeak had previously attempted to purchase a firearm from the store Jan. 22 and was denied through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System. The same clerk was present for both interactions.

McPeak is being held in Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Thursday before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell.
