Community college plan could incentivize more enrollment

One of the proposals made by President Joe Biden in an address to Congress on Wednesday evening was two years of free community college for everyone.

Included in his $1.8 trillion proposal to help American families, Biden called for the allocation of $1.9 billion in federal money to community colleges to allow people to attend free for two years.

Nick Neupauer, BC3 president, said federal initiatives such as this can be the deciding factor whether a student attends community college.

“It works from a macro to a micro level,” he said. “It really shows how something great can happen on a federal level and impact our students.”

Neupauer also said that the benefits of community college, such as its affordability and accessibility, will be further strengthened by federal advocacy.

To him, the track record of the Biden administration already demonstrates that advocacy.

“As president of BC3, I talk about the great benefits of going to community college, and specifically ours,” Neupauer said. “This administration is very much moving that point forward at a federal level.

“If you track the fact that the first lady is a professor at a community college, she knows first-hand the impact of a high-quality, affordable and accessible education.”
