Hunter Truck fire may be result of malfunction

The Hunter Truck Center caught on fire April 16. The owners are planning to rebuild after losing two garages in the incident.

The owners of Hunter Truck are planning to rebuild its body and collision shop on Oneida Valley Road after a fire took out two of its garages April 16.

Nancy Hunter Mycka, senior vice president of Hunter Truck, said members of the company believe a truck in a garage malfunctioned and sparked the initial fire. The fire escalated by spreading to paint and paint thinners located in the garage, which caused a lot of structural damage.

In addition to the structure, Hunter Mycka said the supplies in the affected garages will likely account for a big loss as well.

“The damage cost will be significant,” Hunter Mycka said. “We're working with the technicians to take inventories of their tools.”

Firefighters at the scene said no one was injured in the fire.

Hunter Mycka said the company has insurance on the property, and she and its other owners plan to update the garages and equipment, some of which have not been updated for decades.

“We want to put in a lot more paint technology that we didn't have in the building before,” Hunter Mycka said. “We're also thinking of putting in drive-through bays because the length of the garage before wasn't long enough to put two trucks in there.”

A new sprinkler system is also on the list of updates for the location, Hunter Mycka said.

Hunter Mycka said she and the other owners of Hunter Truck have been hearing from past and present affiliates of the business offering support since the evening of the fire.

“Some of the local dealerships have been reaching out,” Hunter Mycka said. “Car and truck dealerships have been helping us to get some names for help.”

Hunter Mycka said the company does not yet have an estimate of the cost of the damages.
