It seems like drivers took the “Don’t Drink and Drive” mantra seriously during Memorial Day Weekend.

Roving and stationary DUI patrols run by state police in Butler County over the weekend didn’t result in many DUI arrests.

Of the 163 vehicles stopped throughout the weekend, the checkpoints led to only two arrests and one traffic citation.

Only one driver was alleged to be driving under the influence and that driver was arrested for DUI, according to police.

The only other arrest was the result of an unspecified misdemeanor, police said.

According to PennDOT’s 2017 Pennsylvania Crash Facts and Statistics Report, crashes increase during holiday periods due to the high volume of traffic on the road.

The report states that while 12 percent of all holiday crashes involved alcohol use, 37 percent of fatalities during holidays are due to alcohol use.

According to the report, Memorial Day weekend crashes make up more than 6 percent of alcohol-related holiday crashes.

The report also states that the weekends before or after a holiday weekend sometimes have as many crashes and fatalities as the holiday weekend, if not more.

Combining the weekends before and after Memorial Day with Memorial Day numbers, alcohol-related crashes during or around Memorial Day accounted for 20 percent of all holiday alcohol-related crashes in 2017.

A breakdown of Memorial Day alcohol-related accidents in the state, according to PennDOT are:

Pre-Memorial Day 2017: 11 percent of the 1,077 accidents and three of six fatalities were due to alcohol.

Memorial Day 2017: There were 950 crashes and nine fatalities. Thirteen percent of 950 accidents and one of nine fatalities were due to alcohol.

Post-Memorial Day 2017: There were 1,095 wrecks and 10 fatalities. Twelve percent of 1,095 accidents and three of 10 fatalities were due to alcohol.
