Old Herman general store demolished
Bauer Excavating demolishes the closed general store in the 800 block of Herman Road on Tuesday. The store's longtime owner, John “Bernie” Leinenbach, closed shop in the mid-1990s, according to his daughter, Gay Hawkey, and it has sat empty since. Leinenbach died in April at age 88. Hawkey said the store was named Leinenbach's General Store, but she said the community called it the Herman Store. Leinenbach bought the store in 1969, Hawkey confirmed after checking its deed. Gasoline pumps caused a fire in 1977 that destroyed much of the building, but Leinenbach rebuilt and reopened the without the gas service soon after. “He loved that store,” Hawkey said. “That was his life.”
