An Evans City man was sentenced Thursday to state prison in two assault cases, including one in which he stabbed another person at a child's birthday party.

Austin D. Young, 22, was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in a state correctional facility by Butler County President Judge Thomas Doerr. He was also ordered to pay court costs and a $100 fine.

Young pleaded guilty May 10 to felony aggravated assault and summary harassment in two cases.

Butler Township police initially charged Young with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and summary harassment after an incident at Bon Aire Bowl at the Bon Aire Plaza, Butler Township, on Jan. 14, 2017. He pleaded guilty to the felony in that case and the remaining charges were dismissed.

Police said both men were attending a 5-year-old's birthday party when Young stabbed Dillon Mayberry, of Butler, twice in the lower left leg after Mayberry confronted Young over money Young owed him, according to court documents.

After an argument regarding the money, police said the men separated and resumed bowling without any further problems, before Young's mother confronted Mayberry about the argument and advised him to leave “if he can't get along with Young,” documents said.

The victim and his girlfriend, who were with their infant child, decided to leave. But before he could get out the door, Mayberry passed Young and the two again started to argue, police said.

Young told police, documents said, that Mayberry punched him in the face “a couple of times.”

According to Mayberry, the fight happened when he saw Young with his hand near his hip and he thought Young had a knife.

The two men ended up on the floor, with Mayberry on top of Young, who started stabbing Mayberry, documents said.

Young admitted he was afraid, pulled out his knife and stabbed Mayberry, police said.

Several others attending the party intervened and broke up the fight. Mayberry left and went to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Young was arrested after police were alerted to the stabbing.

He was also charged with misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment after an incident at an apartment in the 800 block of Prospect Road, Forward Township, on Sept. 10.

State police filed the charges after they say a neighbor made a report of a domestic incident at the apartment.

Police said Young assaulted a man after that man assaulted Young's mother. He pleaded to the summary harassment charge in that case.
