JEFFERSON TWP — An engineer will discuss updating and renovating some of the buildings in the South Butler School District.

The board agreed to the recommendation of David Foley, superintendent, to invite an engineer from The Foreman Group, the district's architectural firm, to the Nov. 7 meeting to give a presentation on a feasibility study.

If the board approves a study, Foley said the firm would likely use a demographer to determine its own future enrollment predictions as opposed to relying on those provided by the state Department of Education.

He said the department predictions and those of local demographers are often very different.

The purpose of the feasibility study presentation, Foley said, is for the board to decide whether Foreman engineers should peruse all facilities in the district to determine which are in need of repair or replacing.

“We know some of the buildings could be updated,” Foley said.

He suspects that the secondary building, which houses the middle and high schools, is the most in need.

In addition to enrollment predictions, the feasibility study would include public input and other factors.

“We are coming to the end of our outstanding bond from previous renovations,” Foley said, “and when you're ready to pay things off, you start looking around.”
