KARNS CITY — Water faucets in Karns City School District schools where elevated levels of lead and copper were found have been replaced, but will not be used until tests show they are dispensing clean water.

The school board agreed Monday to allow Gannett Fleming to conduct the testing even though the company did not submit a contract for the work before the meeting for the board to consider, Superintendent Eric Ritzert said.

The board will vote on the contract at the Oct. 9 meeting.

Tests conducted on Aug. 31 found lead levels higher than the acceptable level of 0.015 milligrams per liter in five rooms in Chicora Elementary School.

At the junior-senior high school, seven rooms had copper levels exceeding the acceptable level of 1.3 milligrams per liter and one room exceeded the acceptable lead level.

One room in Sugar Creek Elementary School had a high concentration of lead.

Faucets in those rooms were replaced and water lines were flushed over the Labor Day weekend.

“We replaced several of faucets that were identified in the recent testing. We have not returned anything to service as of yet that was tested and had elevated levels. We will not do so until the additional testing is completed and the results show results that are below reportable levels,” Ritzert said Tuesday.

Gannett Fleming will take samples this week and the result of those tests will be posted on the district’s website, he said.
