Studies kept rolling through winter break for some Slippery Rock University students.

There were 1,765 students enrolled in 191 courses through winter session, according to Amanda Yale.

Winter session is a chance for students to enroll in accelerated courses and cram in some extra credits.

“Winter session at SRU is used to help students get ahead and stay ahead in their educational curriculum,” Yale said. “We use it as a way, between the terms, students can take up to six credits.”

Of the total enrolled in winter session, 1,316 were undergraduate and 449 were graduate students.

Yale said the university has made the option more appealing to its students by making the classes convenient.

“Nearly all of that is online,” she said. “The only thing that would not be online would be internships.”

Yale said the university also offers a wide variety of courses.

“It’s not one particular area,” she said. “The courses that are offered really represent the programs across all four of our colleges.”

SRU’s colleges are business, education, liberal arts, and health, environment and science.

While the winter session draws some students from other universities who are hoping to transfer credits back to their own four-year colleges, the majority of students participating in the program already attend SRU.

“We find that students stay on track,” Yale said. “Sometimes, they might be on a major that is very rigorous and this helps students reduce their time toward their degree, so they are graduating in four years.”

Yale said she could see winter session continuing to grow as more courses become available online, allowing students to continue learning during their winter break, especially from the comfort of their own homes.

“Students like the experience of online at home,” Yale said. “To have that many take winter courses, you can see an interest there.”
