Hearts melted recently as the Butler Little Theatre youth production took to the stage with “The Snow Queen.” Shannon Donovan's unique vision came to life in an impressive and intensely creative theater experience. Her use of music, interesting props from boats to bunk beds to a sit-n-spin and magical garden combined with a super cast gave the audience what they came for and a little more.

Carrie Peters as the storyteller moved the story along and filled in the gaps as the tale of Gerda, Kay and the Snow Queen spilled out onto the stage. Peters' knack for drama, theatrical voice and performance kept the audience engaged.

Little Gerda played by the small but mighty Naomi Eberle was a joy to watch. Those dimples and eye rolls along with her smile and a confident stage presence had all the marking of little leading lady quality. Her chemistry with Kay during their shenanigans was genuinely delightful.

Kay played by Owen Boring was a steady portrayal of a young boy who succumbed to the Snow Queen's spells and tricks. He moved well between fun loving little boy to spellbound captive and back again.

The Smith brothers, where to begin? Sawyer and Rowan's characters were amazingly portrayed. Sawyer's soliloquy as the Crow was rapid fire and passionate, what a memory. Rowan as the prince was entertaining from his beard to his jammies.

The duo also played sassy and spunky kids full of taunting and teasing ways.

Tara Potter as the Old Woman brought a mixture of eccentric and frightening to that role.

A delightful spunky surprise was that of the bossy Robber Girl played by Lexie McCurdy. The spitfire was bold and brassy but also showed her sensitive side. Her body language and raw delivery were fun to watch.

The reindeer played by Montana Simpson was also a sweet surprise. Simpson and Eberle were costars in “Jungal Book” and their special chemistry with each other has not changed.

Other strong performances were offered up by Annalie Zito and Laila Tyler and the remaining cast whose characters were all enjoyable and fun. Donovan obviously brought out their best.
