Charges filed Tuesday, Sept. 22, accuse a Bairdford man of racking up more than $1,000 in purchases on a credit card he found in the parking lot of a Buffalo Township business.

Police said they identified Daniel Art Mellinger Jr., 47, after he used the card to purchase pizza in a transaction that was linked to his account at the location.

Mellinger was charged Tuesday by state police in Kittanning with felony access device fraud, 20 misdemeanor counts of identity theft and one misdemeanor count each of theft and possession of a counterfeit device following the purchases between April 15 and 18.

Police said Mellinger admitted to finding the credit card in a Burger King parking lot. He received one misdemeanor identity theft charge for each transaction made. The transactions totaled $1,204.15, according to charging documents.

Police linked Mellinger to the theft through his Fox’s Pizza account. The card owner said the card went missing after being used April 14 in the Burger King drive-thru. The following day, the card was used at Fox’s Pizza with the transaction linked to Mellinger’s account.

Mellinger used the card, sometimes for multiple transactions, at Fox’s Pizza, Cummings Coffee inside Butler Memorial Hospital, GetGo, Target, Sheetz, Dollar General, Walmart and on Walmart.com, police said.

Mellinger’s preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
