Members of the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department took to the streets Friday, boots in hand, to raise money for the department's operating budget.

Motorists stopped at lights and in stalled traffic generously rolled down windows to donate what they had to the department.

Lieutenant Brian Greenawalt said the community frequently donates money and time to help the department succeed.

“Over the past three years, we started doing a spring and fall boot drive along with other fundraisers to assist our general operating budget,” Greenawalt said. “We've had a very good response from the community, from the municipal leaders in Evans City. They've been very supportive.”

Department volunteers stood by intersections along Route 68 in the borough, carrying large boots to collect any donation's that motorists were willing to give.

Greenawalt said drives like these are important to see that the borough gets the fire protection it needs.

“This is a vital service to the community. We're all volunteers, and we put in a lot of our own time,” Greenawalt said. “The community giving back to a service that benefits them is important.”
