Butler Twp. approves Speedway liquor license
BUTLER TWP — Township commissioners on Monday approved the transfer of a liquor license to the Speedway on Hansen Avenue.
Commissioners unanimously approved the transfer from the closed Cooper Station in Winfield Township. Speedway's transfer request now goes to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for final approval.
Mark Kozar, an attorney representing Speedway, said customers would be allowed to buy up to 192 ounces of beer, which is one or two 12-ounce containers more than two six packs, and four bottles of wine at the store.
The alcohol can be consumed in an inside dining area with seating for 30 or taken out, he said.
Employees will receive PLCB and internal training to check customer identification and scanners will be used to detect fake identifications, he said.
Secret shoppers will periodically attempt to make alcohol purchases using fake identification, Kozar said.
Road paving
The commissioners rejected all bids received for this summer's road paving project and decided to split the project into two projects.
Paving a new access road in Preston Park was in the original project specifications, but it was removed due to possible delays in delivery of the park restrooms, said Tom Knight, township manager.
The completion deadline for the road paving project will be Aug. 28 and the completion date for the park road will be Sept. 30. The bid opening for both projects will be June 15.
Another concern was that the crane that will be used to set the restrooms in place in the park could damage a newly paved road, said Cheryl McNeill, assistant manager.
The commissioners also approved sending a letter in support of the City of Butler's grant application to renovate and improve Ritts Park, which straddles the city-township border.
The city applied to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for a $148,000 grant from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program.
